Something that could be a motive for murder. The economy was collapsing all around us. That would do nicely. There was one more consideration. A friend facilitates memoir-writing for senior citizens.

She tells me her top priority is to create an environment within which the seniors feel psychologically safe. Safe to remember. Safe to write. Safe to share. Safe to rewrite. What would make it emotionally safe for me to begin to write? I decided I would approach this challenge as if no one would ever see my book.

No one could criticize it. No one could make those decades-old negative tapes play in my head. This would give me the safety net I needed as I placed my foot on this literary high wire. And it was within this context that I began my first book. There were ups and downs, but overall I really had fun creating, writing. Feel safe, get inspired, have fun, and find a good editor.

Happy writing. His areas of focus have been children, adolescents, families and the educational system. Prior to his retirement from the Memphis City Schools, Jim worked closely with law enforcement on developing procedures involving the investigation of child sexual abuse, youth substance abuse, youth violence, and youth gangs, as well as handling calls involving mentally ill citizens. He taught graduate courses in psychology and social work, as well as undergraduate courses in psychology and education. Jim began writing novels at age sixty-four, when he began his Murder In Memphis series.

I didn't notice a lot o I really wanted to love this book, but it just wasn't that well written. I didn't notice a lot of other errors, except for several places where a line ended in the middle of the line only to be continued on the next line. The plot is convoluted.
Researchers in Memphis have developed an artificial hip joint that will revolutionize the industry. A woman in New York who is a hedge fund manager concocts a intricate plot to have the joint made with inferior screws so that the company stock with fall rapidly within a few months. The woman is known for selling short and she expects to make a fortune, even larger than the one she has already made, when the stock goes in the toilet.
The main police person in the book is a female, Julia Todd. She has worked with Dr. Tanya Proctor, a psychologist, who has taught her and other police officers how to handle difficult situations.
AN INTRODUCTORY WORD TO THE READER
Proctor's husband Josh is an engineer who knows the engineers who developed the artificial hip joint although they work at a different company. After the two engineers and the person who ordered the parts for the joint are murdered, Josh finds, much to his surprise, that his life is also in danger, although he has no idea why. The book contains a lot of psychological mumbo-jumbo, but when Dr. Proctor's husband has difficulty handling the threats on his life, she has no idea of what to say to him or how to help him and the two find themselves at odds.
It was difficult to believe that a psychologist who had worked with the police would be so clueless.

Paavola accomplishes one interesting thing in the book. The main "bad guy" is a woman, but we learn enough about her to be sympathetic with what she has lived through and we end up rooting for her. The author obviously lives in Memphis and all the references to places in Memphis that are familiar to me were fun.
The premise of the hip joint was also realistic since many companies in Memphis do this type of research. James Paavola has written a series of Murder in Memphis books and I ordered two of them at the same time.
THE COMPANIONS OF JEHU
I'm still looking forward to reading the next one and may order more. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this book. I doubt that it would appeal to people who live outside of Memphis or who do not know it well.
